Quick summary of the last year and a bit:
Men's world championship – Croatia took the title during Nations League qualifiers in June 2022. They then held it until the World Cup semi-final, when they lost to Argentina. Since winning the World Cup in thrilling fashion, they have only played four friendlies against mediocre opposition, and won them all.
Men’s world sp00n – American Samoa have been inactive since July 2019, the same month they took the sp00n.
Men’s European championship – Croatia’s European title obviously survived their defeat to non-Europeans Argentina, but they eventually lost their title, defeated on penalties in the Nations League final by Spain.
Men's European sp00n - San Marino's run now stretches to 88 unsuccessful offloads since 2011. Oh dear. I would love to see them win a match one day, but I’m not holding my breath.
Men’s South American championship – Argentina have not faced South American opposition since March 2022.
Men’s South American sp00n – Bolivia have played friendlies against Peru, Ecuador and Chile in the last year, but have not won (or scored in) any of them.
Men’s African championship – Since last summer, Senegal, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa have all had their turns as champions. Then Zambia retook it last month by winning the COSAFA Cup, beating South Africa in the semis.
Men's African sp00n – The Seychelles were already on a record run, and have extended that further by losing all nine matches they have played since last summer.
Men’s Asian championship – Australia have not faced Asian opposition since June 2022. They are due to begin 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November.
Men’s Asian sp00n – In December 2022, Chinese Taipei ended their 3-year run as sp00ners by beating Thailand. Thailand then entered the AFF Championship, in which they began by offloading the sp00n to Brunei, who lost the rest of their games in the tournament, and are the current holders.
Men’s CONCACAF championship – Panama were champions for a year, before losing to Canada in the Nations League semi-finals. The Canadians lost the final to the US, who then took the title into the Gold Cup (with an under-strength squad). They lost on penalties in the semi-final to Panama, who lost the final to Mexico.
Men’s CONCACAF sp00n – Anguilla lost a Nations League tie, 2-1 to St Lucia, and have been sp00ners for 19 years now.
Men’s Oceania championship – New Zealand have not faced Oceanian opposition since March 2022 (they pretty much never do, outside of Oceania World Cup qualifiers).
Men’s Oceania sp00n – Tonga have remained inactive since 2019.
Women's world championship – Mexico took the title into the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship. They lost their opening game to Jamaica, who duly lost their next game to the US. The US went on to win the tournament, and lost their title in a prestigious Wembley friendly in October 2022 to European champions England. The English had seven successful defences before losing to Australia in April. The Matildas then took the title into their home World Cup, where they lost their second game to Nigeria. This was a historic result, making the Super Falcons the 23rd team – and first African team – ever to hold the women’s UFWC. They subsequently lost to England, who took the title into the final, which they lost to Spain.
Women’s world sp00n – In the last 12 months, Gibraltar have played two friendlies, losing 12-0 to Hungary and 7-0 to surprise opponents Panama.
Women's European championship – I said last year that France would beat Norway’s all-time European record of 30 successful defences (1998-2001) if they could win the Euros. In the end, they lost to Germany in the semi-finals, so ended their run on 29. Germany, of course, lost the final to England, who did not then lose to European opposition until the World Cup final against Spain. The Spaniards are thus currently the unofficial European champions for both men and women, as well as the women’s World champions.
Women’s European sp00n – Gibraltar are still the holders.
Women’s South American championship – Colombia took the title into the 2022 Copa America Femenina, where they won every match until the final, but then lost 1-0 to Brazil. Brazil’s only defence since then was a 4-0 win in a friendly against Chile.
Women’s South American sp00n – Peru have held this since 2006, and still do. They lost all four games at the 2022 Copa America Femenina, and have suffered four defeats and a draw in friendlies since then. They only scored one goal in those nine games (in a 6-1 defeat to Uruguay).
Women’s African championship – The summer of 2022 was a busy one for women’s football. Africa also held their continental championship, and Morocco, who had been champions since April, made it through to the final (including a notable win on penalties over Nigeria), but lost 2-1 to South Africa at the last hurdle. South Africa lost a September friendly to Zambia, who have won their only match since.
Women's African sp00n – Mauritania have not played since October 2021.
Women’s Asian championship – Having become official and unofficial Asian champions in February 2022, China won a further three matches last July, but have only played non-Asian opposition since.
Women’s Asian sp00n – Macau have not played since 2018.
Women's CONCACAF championship – As outlined in the women’s world championship above, the US took the title by winning the CONCACAF W Championship. Their only match against CONCACAF opposition since was a 2-0 win over Canada.
Women’s CONCACAF sp00n – The Turks and Caicos Islands have not played since April 2022, but are due to face Aruba in September. This would be Aruba’s first ever match in any world or continental championship or sp00n match, meaning that there will then be only of FIFA’s 211 nations which will have never contested any of the 28 titles – Montserrat.
Women’s Oceania championship/sp00n – New Zealand have not played Oceanian opposition since 2018; American Samoa haven’t played any opposition since 2019.
