Quick summary of the last year:
Men's world championship – At the start of the season , world champions Argentina won a further four games before facing Uruguay in November. The Uruguayans were by far the toughest opposition Argentina had faced since winning the World Cup, and beat them 2-0. Uruguay then suffered a shock friendly defeat to the Ivory Coast (2-1 in Lens in March). The Ivorians have defended their title against Gabon and Kenya, and face Zambia in September. They are the first African UFWC champions since Nigeria in 2005.
Men’s world sp00n – American Samoa hadn’t played since the Pacific Games of July 2019, but ended their inactivity by entering the Pacific Games again in November 2023. A further four heavy defeats followed (one of which didn’t count for UFWC purposes as their opponents, Northern Mariana Islands, are not full FIFA members).
Men’s European championship – Having taken the European title at the end of 2022-23, Spain have played 15 internationals against European opposition in 2023-24 and won every single one – this of course culminated in their victory in Euro 2024. Their run is currently the fourth longest in unofficial men’s European championship history.
Men's European sp00n – Eight more matches for San Marino, eight more defeats. 96 consecutive unsuccessful offload attempts now.
Men’s South American championship – As with the world title, Argentina lost out to Uruguay in November 2023. Uruguay’s title obviously survived their defeat to non-South American Ivory Coast, but they lost the title in the Copa America semi-final to Colombia instead. Colombia then lost the final to Argentina, who thus took the title back in no time.
Men’s South American sp00n – Bolivia offloaded the sp00n with a 2-0 win over Peru in a World Cup qualifier in November. Peru have played four matches since then, drawing three and losing the other.
Men’s African championship – Zambia lost a friendly to Egypt in October, so it was the Pharaohs who took the title into the Africa Cup of Nations in January. They lost on penalties to DR Congo in the last 16. The Ivory Coast beat the Congolese in the semi-final, and have since won the final, and then defended the title three more times.
Men's African sp00n – A further seven fruitless offload attempts for the Seychelles, who have been sp00n holders since 2017. Their run is up to 46 unsuccessful offload attempts now – the previous men’s African record was 24.
Men’s Asian championship – Australia defended their title seven times until losing in the Asian Cup quarter-final to South Korea. The title then went to Jordan in the semi-final, and Qatar in the final. Qatar have defended the title four times since.
Men’s Asian sp00n – Brunei began the season with a further three defeats by an aggregate score of 22-0. But last month, they played Sri Lanka twice in four days, and beat them 1-0 both times.
Men’s CONCACAF championship – Having taken the title in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, Mexico immediately lost it in a Nations League quarter-final 1st leg to Honduras. Mexico won it back in the 2nd leg and beat Panama in the semi-final, but lost to the USA in the final. The Americans then lost a Copa America group game to Panama, who are due to defend their title against the USA, this time in a friendly, in October.
Men’s CONCACAF sp00n – History made in the Caribbean. After 20 years and 5 days as sp00ners, Anguilla played Turks & Caicos in a World Cup qualifying preliminary play-off. Having drawn the first leg, they drew the second leg as well before winning on penalties. Ominously, though, Turks & Caicos’s first offload attempt is in September in the Nations League – against Anguilla.
Men’s Oceania championship – New Zealand’s run as champions, which started in 2012, goes on. They did actually play against Oceanian opposition this year – in the OFC Nations Cup, and won all four games easily.
Men’s Oceania sp00n – Tonga, having remained inactive since 2019, came to the Pacific Games in November 2023, where a 6-2 win against American Samoa in the 11th place play-off (there were 12 teams) saw them offload the sp00n, and saw the Oceania sp00n unite with the world sp00n.
Women's world championship – Spain’s first defeat as world champions came in a Nations League game against Italy in December. Italy then lost 5-1 to England in a friendly in February. England lost a Euro 2025 qualifier to France in late May, but won the return game four days later, and following a win over Ireland and draw with Sweden, England are still the champions – this is their fourth separate run as holders in the last two years.
Women’s world sp00n – In the last 12 months, Gibraltar have played two friendlies, both against Liechtenstein. They lost 3-2, and then drew 1-1.
Women's European championship – This championship has entirely mirrored the world title in 2023-24, so England are currently holders of both.
Women’s European sp00n – As with the world sp00n, Gibraltar are still the holders.
Women’s South American championship – Brazil have defended their title twice in 2023-24 and, bizarrely, both came in the “wrong” continent (in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup). They beat Colombia 1-0 in the group stage, and Argentina 5-1 in the quarter-finals.
Women’s South American sp00n – Peru held the sp00n for over 17 years (this included four more defeats in late 2023), before a historic 3-2 win over Bolivia in a February friendly. Two days later, they beat Bolivia again – 1-0 this time.
Women’s African championship – Zambia enjoyed five wins and a draw as champions, but then lost 2-1 to Malawi in the final of the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship. Malawi have not defended their title yet.
Women's African sp00n – Mauritania played a couple of matches in January 2023, but have not played since.
Women’s Asian championship – China began their season with a 16-0 win over Mongolia, but soon lost 4-3 to Japan. Japan have had five wins and a draw since, mostly in Olympic qualifiers.
Women’s Asian sp00n – Having previously not played since 2018, Macau have played three times in the last year, losing 16-0 to Chinese Taipei, 6-0 to Guam and 9-0 to Singapore.
Women's CONCACAF championship – Holders, the USA, suffered an astonishing 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the group stage of the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. The title then left the Gold Cup, as Mexico went on to play South American opposition in the quarters and semis (they lost the latter). Incidentally, the US went on to win the trophy. As for Mexico, they then lost a friendly to Canada, and the sides drew in another friendly a few days later.
Women’s CONCACAF sp00n – The Turks and Caicos Islands have played four matches in the last year, all in CONCACAF W Gold Cup qualifying. They lost all four matches (scored 0, conceded 22). As alluded to last year, two of those were against Aruba, for whom these matches were the first they’d ever played in any world or continental championship or sp00n match, meaning that there is now just one of FIFA’s 211 nations which has never contested any of the 28 titles – Montserrat.
Women’s Oceania championship – New Zealand played Olympic qualifiers in February 2024, the first time they had played Oceanian opposition since 2018. They won all five of their matches (scored 32, conceded 2).
Women’s Oceania sp00n – Having not played since 2019, American Samoa entered not one but two tournaments this year. In the Pacific Games, they lost three out of three by a combined 16-0 margin, whilst in the Olympic qualifiers, they lost three out of three by a combined 26-1 margin. In losing 7-1 to the Solomon Islands, they scored a goal for the first time since 2007!! They have held the sp00n since 1998.
