Further to the African section of the spin-offs update that was recently posted on the main site (http://www.ufwc.co.uk/2013/01/ufwc-spin-offs-update-2013/)...
As FIFA declared Sudan's win over Zambia to be void, the UFWC African championship will do likewise. Therefore, it was Ethiopia who took the title into the African Nations Cup. They lost to Burkina Faso in the group stage, and the Stallions have made it through to Sunday's final.
If we followed the original thread (i.e. Sudan beating Zambia), the title would still be going into Sunday's final, but in the hands of Nigeria. Therefore, the winner of that match will be the undisputed champions of Africa, both official and unofficial.

Time for the annual summer update of all 28 competitions:
Men’s world championship. Holders since November 2011, North Korea extended their run as unofficial world champions with a number of wins, documented fully elsewhere on this site. In January 2013, however, they lost their title in famously controversial circumstances to Sweden, in a match that the Swedish FA view as official, but FIFA do not. Sweden saw off Finland a few days later, but soon lost to Argentina, who duly took the title for the second time in less than three years. The Argentines have looked impressive since, with two big wins and three hard-fought draws. In August, they travel to Rome for a mouth-watering UFWC heavyweight clash with Italy.
Men’s world wooden sp00n. Cambodia have played six games in the past year - four in the AFF Suzuki Cup, and two in Asian Cup qualifying. They have lost all six.
Men’s European championship. I said last year that not since Germany were beaten by Serbia in the 2010 World Cup have any of the major European nations even played a title match. That still remains the case, after another year in which the most prestigious of the continental titles has travelled between Europe’s middle-ranking nations. Last August, Romania lost to Slovenia, who promptly lost to Switzerland. The title has been in Swiss hands ever since, thanks to successful defences against Albania, Norway, Iceland, Greece and Cyprus. The next challengers will be Iceland once again, in September.
Men’s European wooden sp00n. Another harrowing year for San Marino. At home to Malta last August, they lost 3-2. Since then, they have played seven matches, including two against England. They have lost all seven, scoring no goals, and conceding 33. Their story of woe will continue in September against Ukraine.
Men’s South American championship. South America’s marathon World Cup qualifying programme has ensured another busy year in this championship. The season began with champions Uruguay being thumped 4-0 in Colombia. The Colombians then looked solid through four successful defences, before a slightly surprising 1-0 defeat in Venezuela. “La Vinotinto” then claimed a fine draw in the altitude of La Paz, Bolivia, but then suffered a shock home defeat to Uruguay. Any hopes Uruguay had of being summer champions for a third successive year, though, were dashed when they lost 2-1 to Brazil in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup. It was the first time the Confederations Cup has hosted a match in any of the 28 unofficial competitions since 1992. Brazil thus take the title for the first time since 2009. Next, they will face Argentina in two matches in September and October. These matches could potentially unite the world title with the South American title. They could also see Argentina take the South American title for the first time since 2004. All of the other nine South American nations have held the title since.
Men’s South American wooden sp00n. Paraguay have had a terrible time in the World Cup qualifiers, but they did offload the sp00n with a win over Peru in October. The sp00n then passed to both Chile and Uruguay. Uruguay then faced unofficial South American champions Venezuela. It was sp00ners Uruguay who came out on top, meaning the two countries swapped places. Venezuela are now the sp00ners, and face Chile in September.
Men’s African championship. Soon after last year’s post was written, Sudan were stripped of the win over Zambia by FIFA, due to fielding an ineligible player. They were thus stripped of the unofficial African title too. It retrospectively returned to Zambia, who subsequently lost to Malawi. Liberia, Niger and Ethiopia all took their turn in the spotlight in due course, before the 2013 African Nations Cup got underway. Ethiopia lost their second game to Burkina Faso, who made it all the way to the final before narrowly losing to Nigeria. The Nigerians have since remained unbeaten in three World Cup qualifiers, and play Ivory Coast in a friendly on 5th July.
Men’s African wooden sp00n. Comoros have played twice this year, both against Mauritius. They lost the first 2-0, and drew 0-0 in the second.
Men’s Asian championship. Although North Korea lost the UFWC title to Sweden as mentioned earlier, they are still Asian champions. They have only played twice since that Swedish match – drawing against Thailand and Qatar. They have no further fixtures at present.
Men’s Asian wooden sp00n. The Asian sp00n has run in parallel with the world sp00n since 1979, and still does. Cambodia are the current holders.
Men’s Concacaf championship. The United States secured a historic victory in Mexico City last August to take the title. In September, they lost to Jamaica, only to regain the title four days later. In February, they lost it again, this time to Honduras, but the Americans have played well since. Honduras lost to Panama, opening the way for the United States to take the title yet again with victory over the Panamanians in June. They have one further friendly – against Guatemala – before July’s CONCACAF Gold Cup gets underway. It is almost certain that whoever wins that competition will also be crowned unofficial continental champions too.
Men’s Concacaf wooden sp00n. Anguilla, holders since 2004, have played twice in the last year. They lost 2-0 to St Kitts & Nevis, and 10-0 to Trinidad & Tobago.
Men’s Oceanian championship. Last year I pointed out how long New Zealand had had to wait for a shot at the title that they should expect to dominate. After Tahiti lost to the Solomon Islands last September, that chance finally arrived. New Zealand beat the Solomons four days later, and have held the title comfortably ever since, with wins over Tahiti (twice), New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands. With Oceanian World Cup qualifying now done and dusted, it may be a while before New Zealand need to bother playing against Oceanian opposition again.
Men’s Oceanian wooden sp00n. The Cook Islands have not played since November 2011.
Women’s world championship. The Germans extended their run as WUFWC champions to twelve successful defences, before losing 2-0 to the United States in Faro, the same venue where they had claimed the title themselves twelve months earlier. The US then had to travel to Offenbach for an immediate rematch against Germany, but held out for a 3-3 draw, and have had four comfortable wins since.
Women’s world wooden sp00n. Holders Luxembourg have played five matches in the past year, all against fellow minnows, but have still been unable to rid themselves of the sp00n. They managed draws against Estonia and Latvia, but lost to the Faroe Islands, Malta and Albania.
Women’s European championship. Germany have been holders ever since winning Euro 2009, and have now extended their run to 25 successful defences, the second longest run in women’s European history. They now defend both European titles (official and unofficial) in Euro 2013, starting against Holland on 11th July. If they remain unbeaten and win the competition again, it would bring them to 31 successful defences, breaking Norway’s current European record of 30, set between 1998 and 2001.
Women’s European wooden sp00n. As always, the European wooden sp00n is still running in parallel with the world sp00n. Luxembourg are still the holders.
Women’s South American championship. Ecuador took the title in November 2010, and have not played since.
Women’s South American wooden sp00n. Long-time holders Peru have not played since November 2010.
Women’s African championship. Cameroon managed two further draws in friendlies, before heading off to Equatorial Guinea for the women’s African Nations Cup. They lost their opening game to Nigeria, who made it to the semi-finals before losing to South Africa. In the final, the “Banyana Banyana” were no match for hosts Equatorial Guinea, who won 4-0. However, since that final, in November 2012, Equatorial Guinea have not played again, nor are they currently scheduled to.
Women’s African wooden sp00n. Guinea-Bissau took the sp00n in 2006, and have not played since.
Women’s Asian championship. Japan still hold this title, although they have only defended it once in the last 12 months – a 1-0 win over China in Faro.
Women’s Asian wooden sp00n. Guam lost 4-3 to Hong Kong in Yona last July, and have not played since. It is still their only international since 2009.
Women’s Concacaf championship. As speculated upon last year, the United States did indeed meet Canada in the London Olympics (although the match was played at Old Trafford). It was in the semi-finals, and the Americans won 4-3 on their way to another gold medal. They have only had two further defences since – an 8-0 romp against Costa Rica, and a 3-0 win over the Canadians. They have now had 12 successful defences, so there is still some way to go to match their record run of 50 between 2001 and 2010.
Women’s Concacaf wooden sp00n. Turks and Caicos took the sp00n in 2006; their last match was in March 2010.
Women’s Oceanian championship. New Zealand have not played since April 2012.
Women’s Oceanian wooden sp00n. American Samoa have not played since September 2011.

Time for the annual summer update of all 28 competitions:
Men’s world championship. An action packed twelve months in the UFWC began with Argentina as holders. They scored an impressive victory over Italy in Rome, before winning World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru. With qualification already assured, though, they lost their final World Cup qualifier to Uruguay, whose victory earned them not only the UFWC title but a World Cup qualification play-off against Jordan as well. A 5-0 win and 0-0 draw kept the title with Uruguay, who ensured the title would be contested in the World Cup itself as they remained undefeated through their final three friendlies before the tournament. Their first game in Brazil, though, resulted in a shock defeat to Costa Rica, who then remarkably held off Italy, England and (on penalties) Greece. They then lost the UFWC in the World Cup quarter-final against Holland, but even then they fell on penalties. For the first time in UFWC history, there were three penalty shoot-outs in a row as Holland fell to Argentina in the semis, before Mario Gotze’s extra-time goal gave Germany both the official and unofficial world titles. Coincidentally, their first UFWC defence will also be against Argentina, in a Dusseldorf friendly in September.
Men’s world wooden sp00n. Things have got no better for Cambodia in the last year – defeats against Guam and Singapore mean they remain (unofficially) the worst team in the world.
Men’s European championship. Switzerland spent nearly two years as European champions. In 2013-14, they saw off Iceland, Norway, Albania and Slovenia in World Cup qualifiers, and Croatia in a friendly, and then headed for Brazil. In the World Cup, their run finally came to an end with a spectacular 5-2 defeat by France. The French lost their first defence in the World Cup quarter-finals against Germany. The Germans’ next fixture against European opposition comes in the Euro 2016 qualifiers against Scotland in Dortmund in September.
Men’s European wooden sp00n. San Marino are close to unwanted history. Four more World Cup defeats, as well as a 3-0 home defeat in a friendly against Albania, have extended their run as sp00n holders to 19 matches. Another five failures to offload the title will see their run become the longest in European sp00n history. It is nearly impossible to see them preventing this from happening.
Men’s South American championship. Brazil never did play their matches against Argentina. Their first defence saw them beat Chile in Toronto in November. They only played two more South American fixtures in 2013-14, and both came in their home World Cup. In the second round, they edged past Chile on penalties, before seeing off Colombia in the quarter-finals. Obviously what happened in the semi-finals didn’t affect their standing as unofficial South American champions. They are due to face a rematch against Colombia in a friendly in September.
Men’s South American wooden sp00n. Venezuela lost to Chile, but then offloaded the sp00n to Peru. Peru then lost to Argentina and drew with Bolivia. With that, the South American World Cup qualification ended, and there have been no sp00n fixtures since.
Men’s African championship. Nigeria played Ivory Coast in two friendlies in July 2013, winning the first but losing the second. The Ivorians then drew a World Cup qualifier with Morocco, before entering the World Cup qualification play-offs. They were drawn against Senegal, and claimed a win and a draw to keep the unofficial African title. Since then, they have concentrated on playing fixtures against teams from other continents, but will face Cameroon in an African Nations Cup qualifier in September.
Men’s African wooden sp00n. Three more fixtures in the last year for Comoros, and they still hold the sp00n. They drew with Burkina Faso, and then lost and drew against Kenya.
Men’s Asian championship. North Korea’s 22-month stint as Asian champions came to an end last September with a 2-1 defeat to Kuwait. The Kuwaitis enjoyed seven successful defences, before losing to Jordan. Jordan beat Bahrain but lost to Qatar who, in a busy year, have already defended their title twice, and face Uzbekistan in October.
Men’s Asian wooden sp00n. The Asian sp00n has run in parallel with the world sp00n since 1979, and still does. Cambodia are the current holders.
Men’s Concacaf championship. The United States took the title into last July’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. They stormed through the competition, winning all six matches and beating Panama 1-0 in the final. However, their unofficial title was squandered at the next opportunity, losing a World Cup qualifier to Costa Rica. “Los Ticos” drew with Jamaica but lost to Honduras, who defended their title against Jamaica but haven’t faced CONCACAF opposition since last October. In August, they face Cuba.
Men’s Concacaf wooden sp00n. Anguilla, holders since 2004, haven’t played in the last year, but are due to face Antigua and Barbuda in September.
Men’s Oceanian championship. Twelve months ago, I suggested that New Zealand may not bother playing against Oceanian opposition for a while. And indeed they haven’t.
Men’s Oceanian wooden sp00n. The Cook Islands have not played since November 2011.
Women’s world championship. The United States began a busy season in the WUFWC with seven wins and two draws, but then lost 1-0 to Sweden in the Algarve Cup. The same competition then saw Sweden lost to Japan, and Japan lose to Germany. The Germans have won four matches since, and face Russia in September.
Women’s world wooden sp00n. Holders Luxembourg have played twice in the last year, losing 12-0 to Poland and 4-0 to Cyprus. Their run as holders is now the longest in women’s world sp00n history.
Women’s European championship. Germany needed to win Euro 2013, and remain undefeated, in order to extend their run as unofficial European champions to 31 successful defences, which would be a new record. However, they lost to Norway in their final group game to dash those hopes. Norway beat Spain in the quarter-finals, and Denmark in the semi-finals, before losing 1-0 to Germany in the final. The Germans have played ten times since, winning all ten, scoring 64 goals and conceding four.
The Germans now emulate Holland (1974), England (1975), Sweden (1989), Brazil (1998) and Japan (2011) in holding all four unofficial titles simultaneously – men’s and women’s world, and men’s and women’s continental. Their domination of world football is certainly growing.
Equatorial Guinea made a return to action in qualifying for the 2015 World Cup. After two draws against the Ivory Coast, their World Cup holders were ended on the away goals rule, but they remain unofficial African champions.
Women’s African wooden sp00n. Guinea-Bissau took the sp00n in 2006, and have not played since.
Women’s Asian championship. Last July, Japan’s run as champions, which began in 2010, came to an end against South Korea, who took the title into the Women’s Asian Cup in Vietnam in May 2014. They remained undefeated through the group stage, but lost their semi-final to Australia. The Matildas then lost 1-0 in the final to Japan, who thus won the official Asian title, whilst also reclaiming the unofficial one.
Women’s Asian wooden sp00n. Guam last played in July 2012, but are due to face Macau in a friendly next week.
Women’s Concacaf championship. Unsurprisingly, the United States are still champions, after one successful defence against Mexico, and two against Canada.
Women’s Concacaf wooden sp00n. Turks and Caicos returned to international football after a four-year hiatus, losing all three of their World Cup qualifiers – to Bermuda, St Kitts & Nevis and the Cayman Islands.
Women’s Oceanian championship. New Zealand have not played since April 2012.
Women’s Oceanian wooden sp00n. American Samoa have not played since September 2011.
Current holders (men’s title/ men’s sp00n----- women’s title/ women’s sp00n):
