Don't suppose anyone has worked out the cup the opposite way round? Who lost to the team that lost the first game etc.

Have just done it - it didn't take at all long, largely because Latvia, having become wooden sthingy holders in 1948, didn't play again until 1991! Below is a complete list of the "hall of shame". Some things to note: It didn't leave Britain until 1926, between 1931 and 1996 it was only held by the three ex-Soviet Baltic states, and the title has still never left Europe, although it came close in the most recent match, when Luxembourg drew 0-0 with Togo.

No sooner had I said the "title" has never left Europe, than the title has left Europe! 12 years after their last victory of any kind, the titans of Luxembourg have beaten Gambia 2-1 with goals from Oriyalli and Tacamora, and Gambia are now unofficially "the worst team in the world."

Gambia lost 2-0 at home to Guinea yesterday, and their next match is away to the same opposition on 2nd June, so they would appear unlikely to offload the title then. Their better hope might be a fortnight later against Cape Verde Islands, whom they beat in September.

Having discovered that the wooden sthingy race was featured in the newsletter, I thought I better double check that the facts were right! There is one alteration to make, but luckily it doesn't have too dramatic an effect. I had got most of my facts prior to 1985 from RSSSF, and since then from FIFA. The list of Estonia results on RSSSF jumps from 1940 to 1992, making me think previously that their defeat to Latvia on 3/8/1942, which was listed on Latvia's results, was probably unofficial. Having done some more research, I'm pretty convinced it was official. Therefore, Estonia took the title on 3/8/1942, and did not relinquish it until 4/7/1993, to Lithuania, so it is they, not Latvia, who kept the sthingy warm for half a century. Since 4/7/1993, the holders were as above, so sorry all you Gambians, but you're still the worst team in the world!

Well, Gambia drew the return matches against Guinea and Cape Verde, so they have not yet relinquished the title. They have a chance to do so at home to Algeria on 8th September (but Algeria would hav to be favourites for this one).

An amazing victory for Gambia - you can see a match report here: www.thepoint.gm/sports1103.htmFIFA rank Algeria 73rd of 208 teams. Having qualified for the world cup in 1982 (when they would have progressed but for the infamous Germany-Austria "fix"), and again in 1986, they are the first former world cup finalists ever to hold the wooden sthingy (the last future world cup finalists to hold the sthingy were Norway in 1928-29).

And now Algeria have "lost" the honour to Mali by virtue of beating them 3-2 yesterday, so Mali are "the worst team in the world", while ranked 40th!

A lot of African interlands has been played this month, because at this moment the Africa Cup of Nations is going on! On 10 January, Mali lost from Egypt (Egypt 1:0 Mali) - a friendly On 21 January, Mali won from Benin (Mali 1:0 Benin) On 25 January, Benin lost from Côte d'Ivoire (Côte d'Ivoire 4:1 Benin) On 29 January, Benin lost from Nigeria (Nigeria 2:0 Benin) Obviously, Benin is not qualified for the quarter finals of the ACN and on top of that, leaves the tournament as the worst national football team in the world! According to the FIFA website, the next match that Benin will play is a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola on 30 May 2008.

Further to the debate on another thread about countries being subsumed into another:
If the USSR had taken over the sp00n after the "subsumation" of Estonia, the sp00n would then have journeyed around as follows:
16 7 1952 Bulgaria 24 10 1954 East Germany 18 9 1955 Romania 28 9 1955 Belgium 25 12 1955 France 25 3 1956 Austria 30 9 1956 Luxembourg 8 10 1961 Portugal 16 12 1962 Bulgaria 23 1 1963 Portugal 21 4 1963 Brazil 28 4 1963 France 26 10 1963 Bulgaria 23 2 1965 Greece 16 10 1966 Finland 25 6 1969 Spain 15 10 1969 Finland 21 6 1972 Albania 10 10 1973 Finland 15 8 1974 Norway 4 9 1974 Northern Ireland 30 10 1974 Sweden 19 5 1975 Algeria 26 5 1975 Libya 23 12 1975 Syria 7 10 1976 Jordan 10 10 1976 Mauritania 12 2 1980 Mali 28 9 1980 Mauritania 12 10 1980 Mali 9 12 1980 Togo 14 12 1980 Niger 28 12 1980 Togo 14 4 1981 Congo 21 8 1981 Gabon 7 12 1985 Congo 9 12 1985 Central Af Rep 2 12 1988 Chad 7 12 1989 Congo 18 8 1990 Malawi 11 12 1990 Tanzania 14 12 1990 Zimbabwe 14 4 1991 Malawi 19 8 1991 Mozambique 20 6 1992 Swaziland 25 10 1992 Zaire 25 7 1993 Lesotho 13 11 1994 Cameroon 4 6 1995 Lesotho 26 1 1997 Swaziland 2 3 1997 Mozambique 15 6 1997 Tanzania 22 6 1997 Togo 13 7 1997 Liberia 27 7 1997 Tanzania 26 7 1999 Djibouti 16 11 2007 Somalia 3 1 2009 Tanzania 7 1 2009 Rwanda
This obviously differs dramatically from the other list, which has Niger as the sp00n holder. Hopefully, one day there will be a sp00n unification bout between the two different holders!
