Inspired by the Unofficial Football World Championships long before they became a clubworldrankings.com partner site, the Oosterpark Rankings' home recently presented the Recopa Mundial. www.clubworldrankings.com/recopamundial.htmThis competition is reserved for former winners of the Intercontinental Cup and the Club World Cup, so it only kicked off in the 1960s. It's in full swing again after a relatively slow two and a half years where Uruguayan teams held the trophy, with the 326th title match taking place this weekend.

The all-time table looks like this now:

Thanks to an early goal, Racing Club managed to beat holders Estudiantes 1-0 yesterday, returning the Recopa Mundial to Racing for the first time since June 1999.
The result gives Vélez a second chance in three weeks to capture the trophy when they take on Racing Club next weekend, as the new champions attempt to retain it for the first time since 1992.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Independiente, 41 Estudiantes, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 19 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1

Holders Racing Club scored first and last in the latest title match, but in the end Vélez Sarsfield took the Recopa Mundial away from them after just one game in possession of the trophy. With a final scoreline of 4x2, Vélez regain the title after 50 months without it. Should the club avoid defeat against River Plate at their own Estadio Jose Amalfitani in the first weekend of December, they will be the team taking the World Super Cup into 2010.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Independiente, 41 Estudiantes, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 20 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1
Title wins by nation, excluding domestic competitions but allowing clashes between two sides from the same country in international club competitions:
Argentina, 54 Brazil, 15 Uruguay, 11 Paraguay, 9 Italy, 5 Spain, 5
Title wins by confederation, intercontinental matches only:
CONMEBOL, 4 UEFA, 1

Para zelenazvezda: Bien por la idea pibe, con este formato se pueden hacer muchos titulos. For all: I don't understand, how uruguayan clubs shared the title for a long time if the first title was win by a spanish team? Please re-explain the title format

Gracias As for the first title win: it wasn't by a Spanish team. Real Madrid did become the first team eligible to contest the Recopa Mundial, but the first time two former winners of the Intercontinental Cup faced each other for the trophy was in March 1965, when Santos played Peñarol. The point is that you have to win the Intercontinental Cup or Club World Cup first, and only after you've done so can you win the Recopa Mundial, the next time you face the title holder. So there was no initial title holder. It took until 1965 for two qualified teams to meet in a qualified match.

Vélez Sarsfield left it late but two goals in the last seven minutes saw them break River Plate's resistance on 06.12.2009. Having beaten their historically more successful rivals 3x1, Vélez keep alive their slim Argentine title hopes, but more importantly, retain the Recopa Mundial. Since their remaining two league games are against sides that never won the Club World Cup or Intercontinental Cup, Vélez will take the trophy into the new decade.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Independiente, 41 Estudiantes, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 21 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1

bardino: a European version would be interesting indeed (counting only games between European Cup winners), and I image the details are certainly available over at the RSSSF, but I won't do it since that is outside the scope of my work at clubworldrankings.com

I made some pre-work for UEFA version of this: Previous Winners of European Champions Clubs Cup (former CL), Champions League and/or UEFA Super Cup (match between CL and EL winner) - and therefor eligible for the title - are: Real Madrid Benfica AC Milan Inter Celtic Glasgow ManU Feyenoord Rotterdam Ajax Amsterdam FC Bayern München FC Liverpool Nottingham Forrest Aston Villa Hamburger SV Juventus Steaua Bucharest FC Porto PSV Eindhoven RedStar Belgrade FC Barcelona Olympique Marseille Borussia Dortmund Dynamo Kyiv RSC Anderlecht FC Valencia FC Aberdeen KV Mechelen (Malines) AC Parma FC Chelsea Lazio Rome Galatasaray Istanbul FC Sevilla Zenit Saint Petersburg Of course there are other european cups (former UEFA Cup and UI Cup, now EL) - but because they are second level, the winner would have to win over CL winner (in UEFA Supercup) to become eligible. I think this would be some kind of comparable format to the "Recopa Mundial" Edit: Oh and by the way - Real became eligible in 1956 by winning the first European Champions Clubs Cup season, but because they won five times in a row it was not before 1961 as a second team (Benfica) became eligible by winning the Cup over FC Barcelona. Funny thing is: In the next year (1962) the two only (!!) qualified teams met in the Cups Final, where Benfica bet Real by 5-3. Three goals by famous hungarian forward Ferenc Puskas were not enough to stop Benfica. Therefore the first unofficial UEFA Super-Champion was Benfica. Their first defense took place in season 64/65 when they won over Real Madrid again (6-3) in quarterfinals. In the same season however, they lost the title to Inter in the finals (Inter became qualified just one year before). Thus making Inter the second champion. From this point it's a lot more work to follow the title around, because there are two italian teams (Inter and AC Milan) eligible for the title and you would have to go through all of 65/66 season of italian league as well as European Champions Clubs Cup and carefuly compare dates. (Besides the two italian teams, Real Madrid and Benfica are qualified at this time)

I figured the 1962 CC final would be the first title match, good to see you got it underway.
Should be relatively easy to do this for European sides, since there are extensive lists of famous derbies available, with precise dates. And off the top off my head, only England has more than 3 different CC/CL winners, so most of the "domestic" meetings would be decided in classical derbies.
Be wary of domestic cup games though, you could lose the trail easily because of them.

I made a mistake - the 6-3 against Real Madrid was a result after two legs. The first leg ended 5-1 (Benfica defending their title), but the second obviously ended 1-2. So Real Madrid were title holder at the end of 1964/65 season, because they quit international competitions at this point. This however makes it a bit easier on the early games. I'm working on it right now and I'll keep you updated.
Edit: Oh and the question is: If an unqualified team wins over the title holder in a final (thus becomeing qualified!) - do they gain the title instantly or is the next season their first chance? I tend to say: No, you can't get quallified and win the title in the same match. What do you think?

Okay, I've made some progress now - here are all title games (the defender is always named first, regardless of home or away team):
#01 | CC F | 02/05/1962 | Benfica vs. Real Madrid | 5-3 #02 | CC QF | 24/02/1965 | Benfica vs. Real Madrid | 5-1 #03 | CC QF | 17/03/1965 | Benfica vs. Real Madrid | 1-2 #04 | CC SF | 13/04/1966 | Real Madrid vs. Inter | 1-0 #05 | CC SF | 20/04/1966 | Real Madrid vs. Inter | 1-1 #06 | CC QF | 15/02/1967 | Real Madrid vs. Inter | 0-1 #07 | CC QF | 01/03/1967 | Inter vs. Real Madrid | 2-0 #08 | DL 26 | 02/04/1967 | Inter vs. AC Milan | 4-0 #09 | DL 05 | 22/10/1967 | Inter vs. AC Milan | 1-1 #10 | DL 20 | 18/02/1968 | Inter vs. AC Milan | 1-1 #11 | DC F | 16/06/1968 | Inter vs. AC Milan | 0-0 #12 | DC F | 26/06/1968 | Inter vs. AC Milan | 2-4 #13 | DL 05 | 03/11/1968 | AC Milan vs. Inter | 1-0 #14 | CC QF | 19/02/1969 | AC Milan vs. Celtic Glasgow | 0-0 #15 | DL 10 | 02/03/1969 | AC Milan vs. Inter | 1-1 #16 | CC QF | 12/03/1969 | AC Milan vs. Celtic Glasgow | 1-0 #17 | CC SF | 23/04/1969 | AC Milan vs. Manchester United | 2-0 #18 | CC SF | 15/05/1969 | AC Milan vs. Manchester United | 0-1
Legend:
CC = European Champions Clubs’ Cup DL = Domestic league (round number) DC = Domestic Cup
F = Final SF = Semi-Final QF = Quarter-Final
And here are the (up to this date) qualified teams:
ESP Real Madrid (1956) POR Benfica (1961) ITA AC Milan (1963) ITA Inter Milan (1964) SCO Celtic Glasgow (1967) ENG Manchester United (1968) NED Feyenoord Rotterdam (1970) NED Ajax Amsterdam (1971) GER FC Bayern München (1974) UKR Dynamo Kyiv (1975) BEL RSC Anderlecht (1976) ENG FC Liverpool (1977)
In season 1977/78 we have two english teams (title holder ManU and new qualified CC and Supercup Winner FC Liverpool) and I'm running a bit into problems here. I know, that the highest division in english football was 'Football League First Division' and I know FA Cup as well as the League Cup. Is there any other english (or UK?) Cup, both ManU and Liverpool played?
Edit: d**n it - I made another mistake - i forgott to check (all) games of Cup Winners Cup, UEFA Cup and UI Cup (= the second and third level european cups). I'll redo the list asap. I don't think it will change THAT much...
Edit2: Accually it changed nothing ;D There are just three games to add until the end of season 76/77:
#19 | UC 1R | 15/09/1976 | Manchester United vs. Ajax Amsterdam | 0-1 #20 | DL 14 | 14/11/1976 | Ajax Amsterdam vs. Feyenoord | 1-1 #21 | DL 31 | 24/04/1977 | Ajax Amsterdam vs. Feyenoord | 2-1
This way we get by the english "Cup problem" mentioned above and move on to the dutch league and KNVB Cup - stay tuned!
