Vélez are indeed the current champions, and have retained their title last night by beating Independiente 3x0.
It was their 22nd successful title bout, still some way off the two teams directly above them (on 41 each). Vélez Sarsfield's next title defence will be in the weekend of March 3, when they take on record champions Boca Juniors.
Things could really become interesting if they hang on to the Recopa Mundial until the knockout phase of Copa Libertadores starts, as we've witnessed just one international title fight in over 3½ years.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Independiente, 41 Estudiantes, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 22 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1

A spectacular match yesterday evening. Vélez were 3-1 down at home to Boca with half an hour left. In a dazzling 20-minute spell, Santiago Silva scored two of the three goals the hosts' managed to snatch. It gave them a 4-3 lead, and although Boca did grab an equaliser two minutes from time, the Recopa Mundial stays in Vélez Sarsfield's hands.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Independiente, 41 Estudiantes, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 23 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1
It appears their next title defence is at home to Estudiantes on April 6 or 7. That is pretty close to the end of the Copa Libertadores group stage from which both sides are expected to qualify. Depending on the Round of 16 schedule, we could finally have an international Recopa Mundial clash again in April. Coincidentally, both Vélez and Estudiantes's next eligible domestic opponents would be Racing Club (who aren't involved in Copa Libertadores and as such would shield the trophy from going outside Argentina if they take it from the then-holders).

An early goal by Gastón Fernández gave Estudiantes a 1x0 win at Vélez Sarsfield as the Copa Libertadores holders regained the Recopa Mundial. Thus endeth a run of four successful title bouts for Vélez. Estudiantes' first title defence comes as early as this Sunday, when Racing Club comes to town, exactly the outfit who took the trophy from Juan Sebastian Veron & Co in November. Speaking of Veron: he picked up two yellow cards inside half an hour yesterday, but being reduced to 10 men didn't prevent Estudiantes from lifting Recopa Mundial for the 42nd time in their history. Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Estudiantes, 42Independiente, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 23 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1 Estudiantes take on Racing Club this weekend. www.clubworldrankings.com

Estudiantes held on to Recopa Mundial on Monday 12.04.2010, courtesy of a 4x0 hammering of Racing Club. They now face struggling giants River Plate on the 24th of April, which could be the last time the trophy is up for grabs in the Argentine league this season. Only a River Plate win will see it contested at domestic level before the World Cup. If Estudiantes win on draw, they might, depending on whether or not they make it and who they draw, have to defend Recopa Mundial in the knockout stages of Copa Libertadores.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Estudiantes, 43 Independiente, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 23 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1

Another notch on Estudiantes' title belt at the weekend: River Plate gifted them a 1x0 win through an own goal. That's 44 successful title clashes for the reigning Copa Libertadores champions. They won't face domestic Recopa Mundial action again this season, but depending on how South America's primary club competition pans out, may be challenged in that one from the Quarter Final onwards.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Estudiantes, 44 Independiente, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 23 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1

Following the quarter final pairings in Copa Libertadores, we finally have an international Recopa Mundial clash again. Estudiantes take on Internacional. It will be the first time Internacional contest the trophy, and the first time a Brazilian side are involved since September 2006. The last time a club from Brazil actually won the trophy is eight years ago now, when Grêmio beat Nacional (URU).
The games take place on 13 and 20 May.

Last night at Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre, Brazilian side Internacional defeated 1-0 in the 88th minute. The goal was scored by Uruguayan Sorondo by headed, so Inter take the title for first time and like zelenazvezda said in this previous post, the contest will travel to Brazil. But Inter have to play against Goias (a non-world champion club) so on 20 May, they'll play against Estudiantes again.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Estudiantes, 44 Independiente, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 23 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Juventus, 1 Internacional 1

A little bit premature my friend The outcome of the entire tie (i.e. both legs) decides who wins Recopa Mundial. So Internacional haven't won it yet. This is the 335th title bout, and a 24-round fight rather than a 12-round contest to stay in boxing terms. It's only half-time, though Internacional are in a great position now. Because the tie is in progress, it doesn't matter who the holders (still Estudiantes) play next. Even if they were to play, say Boca Juniors before the 2nd leg against Internacional, the Boca game wouldn't be a Recopa Mundial clash. This two-legged tie has to be resolved first. Hope that clarifies the system a little bit

It is official now though: Internacional have won the Recopa Mundial for the first time in their history, three-and-a-half years after they became eligible for participation, and indeed in their first-ever title contest.
Estudiantes appeared to have done enough to extend their hold on the trophy, when with two minutes left, they led 2x0 in the second leg, and 2x1 on aggregate. Then, Giuliano managed to score a vital away goal, making it 2x2 over 180 minutes, but Internacional ending up victorious because of this goal in Argentina.
Boca Juniors, 84 River Plate, 58 Estudiantes, 44 Independiente, 41 Vélez Sarsfield, 23 Racing Club, 16 São Paulo, 15 Peñarol, 13 Olimpia, 9 Santos, 9 AC Milan, 6 Real Madrid, 6 Nacional, 5 Grêmio, 3 Flamengo, 1 Internacional, 1 Juventus, 1
-------------------------------- Also eligible for Recopa Mundial contests: Internazionale, Feyenoord, Ajax, Atlético Madrid, Bayern München, FC Porto, Crvena zvezda, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, Corinthians, Barcelona

Internacional face São Paulo in the semi finals of Copa Libertadores in the last week of July and the first week of August, but before that, the new holders will face challengers in domestic action in Brazil, starting this weekend (23 July) with a home league game against... São Paulo!
Brazil has as many eligible sides as Argentina (6), as the list above shows they are: Internacional, São Paulo, Corinthians, Flamengo, Santos and Grêmio.
We know for a fact that Europe will be represented in by an eligible club in the Club World Cup come December (both Internazionale and Bayern qualified for Recopa Mundial decades ago), but it remains to be seen if the Copa Libertadores champions will be Recopa holders at the time.
