Goals six minutes from the end of either half ensured Corinthians has the last laugh when it comes to Recopa Mundial in 2010. Elias and Dentinho did serious damage to São Paulo's bid to clinch a berth in the 2011 Copa Libertadores (and reduced their title chances to a purely mathematical one), while keeping Corinthians in the thick of the title race.
So the Timão will take Recopa Mundial into 2011. It appears that the provisional fixture list for the 2011 Campeonato Paulista pits Corinthians against Santos on 20 February. So for now, that is the next title match, but since the new trophy holders are highly likely to be involved in the group stage of Copa Libertadores that same month, things may change as their schedule is finalised.

Recopa Mundial came out of hibernation on 20 February, as Corinthians' first title defence of 2011 pitted them against Santos. The holders were never in any real danger and ran out comfortable 3x1 winners in this Campeonato Paulista clash. Perhaps Corinthians' next opposition, São Paulo, will prove a tougher nut to crack. At the (belated) time of writing this, both sides are part of a four-way tie at the top of Brazil's strongest State Championship. Corinthians have until 27 March to come up with the answers required to lift Recopa Mundial for the fourth time.

Latest Recopa Mundial developments:
27 March:
Veteran goalkeeper Rogério Ceni scored the 100th goal of his career on the biggest stage in club football: the Recopa Mundial contest between his club São Paulo and holders Corinthians. Ceni's 53rd minute free kick put the home side 2x0 up (Dagoberto opened the score before half-time). While Dentinho pulled one back for Corinthians, São Paulo weren't to be denied a 19th Recopa Mundial.
Of course, the new holders aren't involved in Copa Libertadores this year, so an international title defence will not happen until at least the second half of June. First, São Paulo will entertain Grêmio on 11 June.

Then the calendar changed because of the way the Campeonato Paulista turned out. São Paulo played Santos at the semi final stage and lost 0x2 at Morumbi. That was on 30 April.
Consequently, the double-header that is the final of Paulista 2011, between new holders Santos and challengers Corinthians, will be the next time Recopa Mundial is at stake. The first leg takes place on 8 May (Corinthians at home), with the return leg pencilled in for a week later.
Whoever comes out on top will have to fend off a challenge from Porto Alegre on 22 May, as Santos kick off Serie A against Internacional, while Corinthians visit Grêmio on the opening day of Brazil's national league.

So after Santos' "mission accomplished" in their local State Championship, the story continued like this:
By drawing 1x1 against Internacional in league action, Santos ensured that their two-legged Copa Libertadores final against Peñarol doubled up as a Recopa Mundial tie. Forty-six years ago these two sides took the field in the very first Recopa Mundial clash. Back then, they needed three games to settle the tie in the Uruguayans' favour. But this is 2011, not 1965, and the Santos side of today managed to stay on the right side of the score this time. A 0x0 draw in Montevideo was followed by a 2x1 win in São Paulo, resulting in a third Copa Libertadores for Pelé's old club.
That was also their 17th successful Recopa Mundial tie, moving them past Racing Club in the all-time standings. Having strung together four consecutive trophy wins now (and eight in the past twelve months), Santos are now the second most successful Brazilian side in the competition. Only São Paulo (19) are still ahead of them. It will take a loooooong chain of glory in order to close in on the Argentine cartel that still dominate Recopa Mundial's all-time rankings though. That challenge continues on the 27th of July , when the holders host Flamengo, one of the two currently (8 July) unbeaten sides in Brazil's top flight.

In the past few weeks, Flamengo have taken over control of Recopa Mundial and managed to quadruple the number of successful title bouts behind their name. Previously, their October 1992 Supercopa Libertadores triumph over Estudiantes was their only success in the World Super Cup, but their 4x5 (!) away win at Santos on 27 July started something remotely resembling a chain of victories. Three days later, Grêmio were beaten 2x0 at home. Most recently, despite twice squandering a lead during the visit to Internacional, in drawing 2x2 Flamengo did enough to retain the trophy again. Special kudos go to Ronaldinho. On fire since his return to Brazil, the former Barcelona and AC Milan star was responsible for over half of Flamengo's production in those three title clashes. He may never play in the FIFA World Cup or Club World Cup again, but is well on course to leave a permanent mark on Recopa Mundial. Next up is the biggest challenge to the Mengão's throne: on 8 September, Serie A leaders Corinthians, who went into 2011 as Recopa Mundial holders, host Flamengo in what (currently) would be a genuine top-of-the-table clash.

Liédson continued where he'd left off last time, scoring Recopa Mundial goals for fun. This time, though, his efforts weren't enough to secure Corinthians another notch on their title belt. Henrique levelled things before half time, and after the interval, Borges and an own goal by Chicão gave Santos a perhaps unexpected 1x3 victory.
At least their win gives us a clear view on the road to Japan. If there is to be an intercontinental clash for Recopa Mundial, Santos will have to avoid defeat in four consecutive title games: Grêmio away and then at home in the first half of October, then during trips to Flamengo before October is out and on the last day of the Brasileiro (December 3 at São Paulo). That first game against Grêmio may even be lost, as long as Santos strike back in the reverse fixture, but after that, only an unbeaten run will see Recopa Mundial at stake in the Club World Cup final, provided of course neither European champions Barcelona nor the South American champions slip up in their semi final. Defeat during the second Grêmio game, or at Flamengo, will mean there's no chance World Super Cup will be in the hands of either Santos or São Paulo on December 3.

Looks like I missed the previous update, in which Corinthians took the crown from Flamengo. But it wasn't to last long!
